Being a DJ is an exciting career, but it’s easy to make these common mistakes when starting. I have a few tips to help new DJs avoid making these "ROOKIE" mistakes so you can keep the party going and your reputation growing!

Neglecting Your Playlist Prep
One of the biggest mistakes new DJs make is not spending enough time on their playlist. It’s not just about having the hottest songs; it’s about knowing your audience and being ready to create any vibe. Spend time curating (multiple) playlists that can adapt to different moods and energy levels throughout your set. Remember, a well-prepared playlist is the backbone of a great performance.

Overlooking Equipment Knowledge
Your equipment is your best friend, PERIOD. Many beginners jump straight into mixing without fully understanding how to use a mixer or wireless microphone. Take the time to learn about your mixer, controller, software, and speakers. Knowing the ins and outs of your equipment can save you from all HECK breaking loose at a gig.

Ignoring the Crowd’s Energy
A rookie mistake is to ONLY PLAY YOUR MUSIC without paying attention to the crowd's energy. Being a successful DJ means reading the room and TAKING REQUEST (especially for small crowds). If the crowd isn’t feeling your current selection, don’t be afraid to switch it up and try something different.

Avoiding these common mistakes will help you grow as a DJ and deliver amazing experiences for your audience. Remember, it’s not just about playing music—it’s about creating unforgettable vibes. Stay prepared, know your gear, and read the crowd to keep the party alive!
